About cyber security
The importance of cyber security for individuals, businesses, the industry and for society as a whole, derives from the value of the information which needs protecting, from the impact that malicious activities can have on business operations and from the danger of distorting the democratic values of our society. Cyber security covers the security of all aspects of online information processing, including:
- information itself
- access to the information
- its transportation across networks and the information processing operations in various places – whether on the desktop, within storage, in the Cloud or in motion
Mission and objectives
The University's Cyber Security Research Centre was officially opened in September 2018 with a dedicated investment of £500,000. The Centre was created by the School of Computing and Digital Media as a space where academics and businesses can meet and work together to solve cyber security problems of significance for business and for society. Its core activities lie in three main areas:
- teaching of digital forensics, data analytics and cyber security in a secure environment
- research into cyber security at postgraduate and doctorate level
- industrial research, innovation and consultancy projects in cyber security
Several academic groups (spanning computing, computer networks and electronics and communications) are working together at the Centre to implement these goals. Although the Cyber Security Research Centre is situated within the School of Computing and Digital Media, it is also open for collaboration with other departments at the University and welcomes enquiries from businesses and external organisations.
