Exploring and experiencing other animals' senses and capabilities

Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM) Research Seminar with Dr Fiona French, discussing non-human senses.

About this event

This presentation showcased some of the research we were doing to create new sensory experiences for human designers. The goal was to offer designers some insight into the potential effects of their work on non-human species, by using technology to mimic other animals' sensory modalities, such as infrared and UV light detection, electromagnetic field perception, highly sophisticated pressure sensing, etc.  There are many disciplines where being mindful of non-human others is a positive aspect of the design process, for example, urban planning and architecture, appliance design for domestic environments, and vehicles for land, sea, and air.  Appreciating other species’ range of sensibilities is crucial for understanding how human interventions could impact on different animals' behaviour and welfare.
