Studio 6: Sui Generis

Studio brief

Sui Generis – Where artistic work goes beyond conventional boundaries.

"If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting." – David Bowie.

This multi-faceted studio champions the development of an extremely personal and unique design philosophy through a combination of individual, personally driven initiatives, collaborative work, competitions, industry-orientated and interdisciplinary projects with fashion textiles at its heart and centre.
Participation in this studio will require a fearless, open-minded approach to creative expression, a complete investigation of self, identity, intention, personal memories and cultural heritage. Remember that you are unique, with unique visions to tell – if it doesn’t mean anything to you, "why do it?"

Focus

Both in theory and practice you will explore in depth the creative interface between materials, making and meaning with fanatical technique and an informed professionalism.

Research

A rigorous research technique will be required as the keystone of your process, exhaustively drawing inspiration from everywhere. This, coupled with a strong work ethic, the engaging in group academic debate and an important continuous recording of self-reflection, will enable growth and a deeper understanding of your chosen specialism.

New techniques and materials

You will practice textile techniques and materials in order to subvert the norm, questioning and solving some of the challenges that face us as designers today. You will be offered industry trips and trade shows, both here and abroad. Through live project partners and competitions, you will become aware of the vast speed that fashion and its supporting industry moves and gain the confidence to meet that need. Our focus is innovation that impacts and spans across many sectors exploring new territories for the twenty-first century textiles specialist.

Finishing

It is not just the making, but the then what happens. "It will do" won’t do. Strengthening the spirit of true innovation, this studio is not about safe success but about taking real risk.

Participation in this studio will focus on fashion textiles but students wishing to integrate interior design, fine art or personal responses will be fully supported. Expectations will be high, participation in this studio demands a challenging and dynamic approach.
