Studio Photo 05: Post-Truth. Narrating the (Un)Real

Studio brief

We investigate contexts of documentary, editorial and fashion photography with particular focus on the production, distribution and consumption of images through the medium of independent magazines, photobooks and online platforms. Lecturers and seminars will equip you with a solid grounding in historical and sociological themes, and you will research issues of gender, race, diversity, ethics, politics and media influence in our image-driven culture.

You will explore the work of a diverse range of photographic practitioners as well as furthering your technical knowledge, using a range of media (digital, film, video, 35mm, medium and large format) to develop your work, investigating how to edit and sequence your photographs for different outputs. The studio will also cover aspects of professional development such as self-employment, assisting, marketing and portfolio production.

Fashion photographer Robi Rodriguez will talk about his experience in publishing and Ameena Roje (documentary photographer and writer at BJP) will offer an insight into current industry developments. Field research through visits to galleries, industry professionals, photography studios, commercial printers and photobook fairs (Polycopies and OffPrint at Paris Photo in November, as well as a talk with the editor of The Guardian in February). A partnership with Shutter Hub will support student practice as well as providing work experience opportunities; further internship opportunities will be available through companies such as Espero Studio and Creative Locations.

The studio will enhance your experience by offering the possibility of taking part in OffPrint at Tate Modern in May 2018, where students will present individual or group publications in the form of self-published books and magazines.
