Open Field

Open Field is a residency programme for artists initiated by the Fine Art BA at The Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University.

Like other residencies, Open Field intends to offer space, time and resources to early-career artists to let them pursue their own art practice or a specific project. What sets this residency apart is that Open Field invites the resident artists to engage in the art made directly with the context – the place of art education. Learning and teaching will come to the fore, and questions about using platforms for knowledge-sharing will arise.

The residency studio is located in a large, light and self-contained space alongside the other fine art studios at Central House opposite the Whitechapel Gallery. Art students at The Cass are invited to observe and take part, offering first-hand contact with established and developing professional art practices and direct work-related learning. Art students take part in workshops, attend talks, screenings and public events. Art students are also invited to volunteer for a number of artist assistant roles in each residency period.

Each residency will host public events throughout its one-month period. The Open Field studio will also hold an open-access day every Thursday, plus a closing event on the last Thursday of each residency.
