International PhD scholarships announced

Five full scholarships will help postgraduates to complete their doctorate at London Metropolitan University

Date: 27 August 2013

International students hoping to undertake a PhD at London Met could benefit from financial support thanks to the University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Programme.

A total of five full PhD scholarships are available at the University across a range of disciplines. Four scholarships are based in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities with a further studentship available in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Computing.

One of the first students to complete his PhD through the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship programme at London Met was Dr Kafil Ahmed. He now works as a microwave and radio frequency engineer for Pera Technologies, one of Europe’s leading product development contractors.

“The V-C’s scholarship helped me to finish my PhD successfully”, said Kafil, who is originally from Chittagong in Bangladesh. “The skills I have gained through my PhD helped to get a job in one of the top European Innovation companies, and I have also published two journal papers and seven conference papers.”

Kafil completed his undergraduate degree at London Met before deciding to stay on for his doctorate, and cites the expertise of staff and the facilities as some of the best aspects of studying at the University. “The lab facilities, guidance from supervisors, assistance from technicians and cooperation from the administration was all excellent”, he added.

Kafil’s experience shows how PhD study at London Met can lead to a fulfilling and successful career. Mark Bickerton, Director of the International Office at London Metropolitan University, said: “As a UK University with a strong commitment to academic excellence, we are keen to reach out to high level and committed graduates who are looking to contribute to our research excellence initiative.

“For our Vice Chancellor's Scholarship programmes we are looking for outstanding graduate scholars who have a commitment to research and who have excelled academically in their previous Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. London is such a global city, so we are looking for people who can make a real difference to our international outlook.

“As a well-known and prestigious University, we have a long tradition of offering scholarships to excellent students. This forms part of our global commitment to opportunity, and gives talented people a chance to change their lives forever.”
