Why study this course?

This extended master’s programme is designed for international students who wish to pursue postgraduate study at London Metropolitan University and will allow guaranteed progression on to our International Relations MA.

More about this course

Our Extended Master’s in International Relations begins with a 15-week programme that will help improve your English language ability and study skills before starting your master’s course in international relations. There is also the opportunity for those who need extra English language support to complete a pre-sessional course prior to the extended master’s programme.

Following this initial 15 weeks, you will go on to join our International Relations MA. This will teach you about current international relations in a global context. During the course, you’ll cover a variety of topics including international politics, public law and relations theory through lectures, seminars and discussions. To prepare you for a career in international affairs, you’ll apply your knowledge through presentations, group work and a final dissertation. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to conduct analytical research into many areas of international relations and be able to explore a number of exciting career paths.

Assessment

Your assessments at the end of each module have been carefully designed to ensure you have the opportunity to demonstrate your learning and meet the stated outcomes. Assessment methods include essay writing, formal examinations, report writing, group working, debating and formal presentations, together with the compiling of a portfolio of tasks and activities undertaken.

The programme is planned to build both your self-esteem and your confidence so you’re able to engage fully with study within the UK.

Your early modules will concentrate on supporting and directing your learning in a focused manner to ensure you’re developing at the appropriate rate and that your understanding, skills development and learning is progressing as it should. As the programme unfolds and you move to the second semester modules, the support and direction they receive will gradually be reduced and the students will transition to greater independence and autonomy.

Assessments throughout your modules will form an important part of assessing your progress. In-class activities including group working and discussion, mock debates, writing activities, mock examinations and tutor feedback given to you regarding your individual performance will ensure that you’re fully prepared for the assessments that take place at the end of each module.

Details about assessments during your specific master’s course can be found on the International Relations MA course page.
