Kafil Ahmed, VC scholarship student, successfully passes his PhD and Deepthi N. Ratnayake successfully defends her PhD thesis
Kafil Ahmed, VC scholarship student, successfully passed his PhD viva on Friday 22 March 2013. His external examiner Dr Chris Mann (Chief Scientific Advisor ThruVision Systems Ltd) and internal examiner Dr Nick Ioannides were very impressed with his robust defence and the quality and originality of his work on metamaterial frequency discriminating devices. They commented that his publications which include two journal and several conference papers, are a tangible testimony of Kafil’s calibre. Prof Bal Virdee, DoS and lead supervisor, said he was de-lighted to see Kafil’s hard work and persistence has paid off. He also thanked Kafil’s supervi-sors Dr Anoosh Nabijou and Dr Pancham Shukla for the support and encouragement they gave Kafil that enabled him achieve the goals of his research. Kafil completed his research within the specified time period and is the first VC scholarship to be awarded a PhD. Kafil is now em-ployed as a Microwave and RF Engineer at Pera Technology based in Leicestershire. We wish him every success in his future endeavours.
Deepthi N. Ratnayake successfully defended her PhD thesis on 20 March 2013. The DoS and first supervisor was Prof. Hassan Kazemian and the external second supervisor was Dr Adnan Yusuf. Deepthi’s thesis is entitled "Probe Re-quest Attack Detection in Wireless LANs using Intelligent Techniques". After a short break, Deepthi is looking forward to continuing a ca-reer in research within her fields of interest: Wireless LANs, Intrusion Detection, Feed Forward Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms.
