The third event in a series of lectures on issues in contemporary design at the Cass.
Date: 07 February 2019
The Cass continues its series of forward-facing public lectures focusing on contemporary design. The third instalment of the series, taking place on the Tuesday 19 February, is titled ‘Creativity and Education.'
The free public lecture addresses the increasing trend of creativity, in children’s education, being relegated to the side-lines in the UK’s education sector. Three speakers will be challenging this unwelcome development, all of whom work to inspire and engage young minds creatively.
The first speaker is from Lego Education, a branch of the long-established and much loved toy manufacturer, speaking about the educational value of ‘play’. Lego Education provides nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools with creative ways for students to engage with core STEM curriculum through a hands-on experience.
Professor Daniel Charny, founding director of both Fixperts and Fixcamp, will also be talking at the lecture. Fixperts and Fixcamp are the two entities that make up FixEd, a ‘think-and-do-tank’ primarily concerned with inspiring and equipping creative problem-solvers globally. They assist educators and organisations through award-winning learning programmes for schools and universities, supporting and developing the creative skills that young people need to be successful today and in the future.
The final speaker is Dominic Wilcox, founder and director of Little Inventors. Dominic’s goal, in collaboration with expert educationalists, designers and curators, is to inspire and support children around the world by taking the inventive ideas of the children and making them a reality – realised by professional model makers and engineers.
Peter Marigold, designer and Visiting Professor at The Cass, will host the event that coincides with Celebration Week, an annual opportunity for Cass students to present their work in progress to panels of expert critics.
The event starts at 6:30pm in the Wash Houses, and there will be a drinks reception following the talks.
