CARES Inaugural Applied Research Conference 2024

The Centre for Applied Research in Empowering Society (CARES) successfully hosted its first Applied Research Conference at the Holloway Road Campus. The one-day event highlighted some of London Metropolitan University's finest applied research and featured engaging panel discussions on social justice and inclusive societies. The conference was attended by CARES members, PGR students, and invited partners. 

Showcasing Social Justice and Inclusive Societies Research 

The conference began with a series of presentations on social justice applied research, including:

  • Hilda Mulrooney discussing the value of local food support schemes in building community
  • Diana Stirbu exploring community engagement in urban regeneration
  • James Alexander and John Pitts examining the effectiveness of the public health approach to tackling youth violence in Islington
  • Shaun Yates addressing efficiency reforms in the lower criminal court process
  • Dee Bhakta introducing a nutrition assessment tool for firefighters

A panel discussion followed, focusing on the role of social justice in higher education and how applied research can support this agenda. 

Highlighting Research on Inclusive Societies 

The afternoon session focused on inclusive societies applied research, featuring presentations such as: 

  • Jane Lewis and Josephine Nyby on barriers disabled people face in accessing employment and cultural activities 
  • Stephen Hills and Justin Webb on empowering protective behaviours during health emergencies, in partnership with UNICEF
  • Mabel Encinas on partnerships in education and future interventions

Another panel discussion explored how higher education institutions and their partners can support inclusivity within their broader community. 

The conference concluded with a networking reception, where attendees had the opportunity to connect and discuss the day's insights.
