15 May 2025
The Gender and Sexual Diversity Research Group at London Metropolitan University proudly hosted a vibrant and moving event in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
Held across the Rainbow Room – London Met’s dedicated queer, intersectional space – and the Interpreting Suite, the event brought together researchers, activists, community members, and interpreters in a powerful celebration of resilience, identity, and solidarity.
As part of the programme, Dr Sebastian Cordoba presented his ongoing research on the lived experiences of trans and non-binary Latin American migrants in London. This work, recently published in the Journal of Homosexuality, explores the intersections of gender, migration, and belonging in the UK context.
Following the presentation, a dynamic panel discussion unfolded, featuring key voices from the Latin American community and advocacy organisations. We were honoured to be joined by: Jacobo Belilty from the Coalition of Latin Americans in the UK (CLAUK); Annaís Berlim from Latin American Women's Aid (LAWA); and Jennifer Dos Reis and Rain Branco, who generously shared their personal journeys and insights
The conversation was rich, emotional, and deeply empowering, offering reflections on the past, present, and future of trans and non-binary Latin American migrants in the UK. It highlighted both the challenges faced and the strength of community-led resistance and care.
A special thanks goes to London Met’s outstanding interpreting team, led by Dr Danielle D'Hayer, who ensured the event was accessible in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Ukrainian. We are grateful to interpreters Aretha Melo, João Vitor De Souza Costa, María Felici Ramón, Dana Basurco, and Olena Konopeltseva for their incredible work.
The event was recorded and is available to watch here.
This research was also presented at the INQYR Symposium: Advancing LGBTQ+ Health, Well-Being, & Resilience at the University of Birmingham on 22 May. Dr Sebastian Cordoba co-organised the event with Dr Willem Stander and Dr Liam Cahill, co-leads of the International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR) UK network.
