Bukar Shani gives an insight into his experiences with Guildhall
Bukar Shani, MA Management and Strategic Leadership
During my search for an institution to further my education, I was guided by various factors which I considered as utmost importance. They are the quality of education, location, diversity and affordability. London Metropolitan University stood out as the institution that satisfied these key factors among others. I was further attracted to this school by their philosophy in the provision of quality and affordable education for both local and international students and being located in the heart of one of the world's most exciting City’s, London, makes it a great place to study.
I am currently studying for a Postgraduate degree Masters in Management and Strategic Leadership in the London Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law. Coming from a military background, my experience so far has been really interesting and wonderful. Despite the obvious challenges that come with the profession, my experiences have made me become better equipped not only for the military, but for the contemporary issues that surrounds us globally. The leadership area of my course has widened my scope of education academically and emotionally as well as accurately exposed me to the advantages of learning in a metropolitan environment. This course has indeed been useful in the development of my personal qualities including my strengths, weaknesses, work habits and attitudes towards learning.
In addressing the ever captivating subject of leadership development, the course has also broadened my knowledge in identifying the desired leadership attributes as part of a career-long learning experience needed to support my organisation’s strategic objectives, which is essential to the development of my nation’s military. As global operations over the last decade have demonstrated, military officers must think critically, communicate well, conduct themselves with integrity, and lead others in difficult and often dangerous situations.
Consequently, my analytical and reasoning skills have become better developed over the course of my studies within university. The strategy has been taught with efficient learning techniques and was of immense benefit to the students. Though the method of instruction was a bit strange to me, I however brought my experiences and skills as a military officer to bear in my analysis and contributions in lectures. The university also taught me how to think outside the box while making my analysis as well as encouraging me to have the freedom to express myself and my ideas in entirely new way through personal contacts with my tutors. Finally, my creative-thinking has expanded in its origins and is no longer enslaved by the conventional military barriers. It was indeed a great experience!
It is no doubt that the London Met has been a great experience for me and provided me with not only scholarly knowledge but life skills as well.
