London Met shortlisted for ‘higher education Oscar’

University nominated in the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community category of this year’s THE awards

Date: 9 September 2021

London Met’s work in the local community has been shortlisted in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) awards, widely known as ‘the Oscars of higher education’.

The University has a long history of civic engagement - recently strengthening its commitment through the creation of the London Met Lab - and joins six other universities shortlisted in the ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community’ category.

Led by Sophie Cloutterbuck, Director of London Engagement, alongside our staff, students and partners, London Met labs is bringing our academic and professional expertise to co-design solutions to the social challenges which disproportionately affect the communities that we serve.

“London Met is a truly civic and community university, and I am delighted that our work has been recognised by the THE panel,” commented Sophie.

“London Met Labs:Empowering London is only in the early stages of its mission, but thanks to the commitment of our students, colleagues and local partners we’ve already achieved so much. This nomination demonstrates our position as a leader in civic and community engagement within the higher education sector - I will be keeping my fingers crossed on awards night!”

About the THE awards

This year’s THE awards will celebrate achievements during the 2019-20 academic year, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced widespread campus shutdowns. As ever, they cover the full range of university activity – both academic and professional services, from front-line staff through all levels of leadership and management.

John Gill, THE’s editor, said this year’s awards would “reflect a period of turmoil and innovation necessitated by the pandemic”, yet the record number of entries was a sign of “the brilliance of universities across the whole of the UK and Ireland”.

“With almost 600 institutions, teams and individuals nominated, it really is a fantastic achievement to make it on to this year’s shortlists,” Mr Gill said.

This year’s awards will take place at the Hilton London Metropole on 25 November. The awards will follow the two-day THE Campus Live UK&IE event.
