A member of London Metropolitan University’s Board of Governors has been appointed to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Mark Robson, who has served as a Governor at London Met since April 2010, has joined the HEFCE Board for a three-year term.

HEFCE plays a key role in advising the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills on the funding needs of higher education institutions in England, and to distribute available funds. As a Board member, Mark will share responsibility for the control and management of HEFCE as a corporate body.

“I am delighted to have been appointed by the Secretary of State and the Universities Minister to this important position: to help the Funding Council oversee and support all English universities”, said Mark, who is Head of Monetary and Financial Statistics at the Bank of England.

“For me, this is a really positive sign of confidence in what all the London Met Governors -independents, staff and students - and the senior management team have been able to achieve since 2010.

“I am of course looking forward to continuing to achieve even more here, with all of our great staff, students, alumni and friends.”

Mark's appointment is one of many achievements in an impressive career. He has headed the Bank of England's statistics department since 2009, and also serves as an honorary treasurer of the Royal Economic Society. Other posts have included a position at the IMF in Thailand, where he was an Expert Advisor to the Royal Thai Finance Ministry, and as a principal tax economist for the OECD in Paris.

As well as sitting on London Met's Board of Governors, Mark chairs the University's Finance and Resources Committee.

With such extensive experience and expertise, Mark is a perfect addition to the HEFCE Board. David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science, said: “I am delighted to welcome Mark to the HEFCE Board. He brings with him a vast amount of knowledge and experience which I'm sure will be invaluable for the Board in these challenging times.”
