Graduates from Early Childhood Studies at London Metropolitan University are set to receive Graduate Practitioner status for the first time.

The Early Childhood Studies Degrees Network (ECSDN) has introduced the new framework from September 2019, with these highly skilled graduates entering the workforce in three years’ time.

The practitioner competencies focus heavily on applying academic elements of the degree programme in work placements. Students will meet the nine competencies through assessed observations of practice, practice-based tasks and academic assessment.

Kelly Cooper, Head of the School of Social Professions, said: “The Early Childhood Studies degree at London Metropolitan University was one of the first degrees of its kind in the UK, so it is right that we are at the forefront of this exciting new chapter for the early years sector.

“The enhanced focus on the development of skills within an early years setting will make this new wave of graduates more employable than ever. These competencies are an important step towards building a graduate-led workforce, ready to face the challenges of the future.”

In the most recent Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey, 98 per cent of all 2017 London Met Early Childhood Studies graduates were in work or further study within six months. The teaching on the programme received a 95 per cent student satisfaction rate in the 2018 National Student Survey.
