Cass alumna wins Elle Decoration Textile Design award

Vicky Cowin wins Elle Decoration British Design Award for her exquisite woven wall hangings.

Date: 4 September 2017

Vicky Cowin, who graduated in 2016 from Textile Design BA at The Cass, has been announced as the winner of the Textile Design award in the Elle Decoration British Design Awards 2017.

Now in its 16th year, the Elle Decoration British Design Awards recognise, support and celebrate young and emerging designers, new names and fresh talents, who have made an impact over the last 12 months.

Vicky was nominated for her handmade silk wallhangings, which she creates from her home studio in southeast London. Starting her business last year, Vicky hand-dyes pure silk before using a loom to weave exquisite geometric patterns interspersed with dramatic tufts on complicated woven bases.

Vicky said: “I’m inspired by signs and symbols, alchemy and traditional costumes. I mix up ideas, creating a drawing effect with warps and wefts. I’m always learning - the more complicated things are, the more interesting I find them.

“The award has giving me a boost and helped me know that I'm on the right track. I learnt so much, including woven design, at The Cass and had the opportunity to discover who I am as an artist and what I wanted to do in the future. I'm so thankful for the support from all the tutors who still show an interest in my work and give me invaluable advice.”
