Why study this course?

Our Open Language Programme is aimed at individuals looking to learn and develop their knowledge of a language. These modules will help you develop your skills using a wide variety of teaching methods. Available at different levels, from beginner to advanced, each course combines face-to-face teaching with access to online materials and activities. 

More about this course

The programme includes Arabic, Academic English, French and Spanish. For the 2026-27 academic year, only English will be offered. If you are interested in studying Arabic, French or Spanish, please check back for updates on future availability. 

These modules can be taken as part of your course, as additional paid non-credit modules, or as stand-alone courses by members of the public.

Information for current London Met students

If the structure of your course allows you to take an Extension of Knowledge module, or an optional English language module, you can opt to study English through the Open Language Programme. If you are unsure that this applies to you, please check with your course leader.  

If you don't have the option to take an Extension of Knowledge module, you can sign up for the Open Language Programme as a paying student. Students who take an Open Language Programme module as a stand-alone course will receive a certificate of attendance only.

Members of the public

All our Open Language Programme courses are open to fee-paying members of the public. You'll be learning alongside university students and have access to all the learning resources the University has to offer.

Fees

Fees are £340 for one module or £550 for two modules.

Assessment

Students are assessed by a variety of assessment tools such as tests, exams, coursework, essays and presentations.

The Open Language Programme currently offers English. French, Spanish and Arabic may be available in future years, so please check back for updates on future course offerings. 

How to apply

How to Apply 

To secure your place on the Open Language Programme, you will need to: 

  1. Pay for your course via the eShop. 
  2. Complete the Open Language Programme Application Form

As part of your application, you will also need to submit the following supporting documents: 

  1. copy of your passport

  2. share code (required for non-UK passport holders)

  3. passport-sized photograph for your student ID card

  4. Applicants for OEL069 (Advanced Academic English) will be asked to complete a short English assessment (10–15 minutes). 

Please complete the application form on a computer and submit it only when all supporting documents are ready. Incomplete applications may be returned.

    When to apply

    Application deadlines

    Autumn semester

    Teaching for the September semester intake will begin in the week commencing 28th September 2026 

    Applications will remain open until 2nd October 2026, allowing applications during the first week of teaching. 

    Please note, you may not be able to enrol for language modules if you miss the deadline.

    Spring semester

    Teaching for the Spring semester intake will begin in the week commencing 1st February 2027 

    Applications will remain open until 5th February, allowing applications during the first week of teaching.
