Neurodiversity reflects the rich variation in how human minds work, shaped by the interaction between individuals and their environments. Our research takes a holistic, strengths-informed approach to understanding neurodivergence, recognizing that challenges often arise not from individual differences alone, but from the fit between person and environment. This multidisciplinary research area brings together cognitive biologists and social scientists to conduct both basic and applied research that advances our understanding of neurodivergent experiences and creates pathways for meaningful inclusion.
Our work encompasses investigating the psychobiological mechanisms underlying neurodivergence, including responses to medication and relationships with addiction, as well as exploring cognitive mechanisms such as attention and creative thought. We focus on adapting psychological interventions to better support neurodivergent individuals and reflect their strengths, developing inclusive research practices that centre neurodivergent voices, and supporting parents and carers. Additionally, we examine how environmental changes across education, workplace, design, and community settings can foster neurodivergent flourishing.
Our expertise covers the following areas:
- Psychological interventions and adaptations
- Inclusive research practices
- Support for parents and carers
- Environmental design and accessibility
- Psychobiological mechanisms (medication response, addiction)
- Cognitive mechanisms (attention, creative thought)
While we study neurodivergence broadly, we have particular expertise in ADHD and autism spectrum conditions.
Aims
Our mission is to advance understanding of neurodivergence through research that promotes strengths-based approaches and creates inclusive environments. We work collaboratively with education, design, healthcare, and policy sectors to translate our findings into meaningful real-world impact.
Diverse minds, inclusive futures – we aim to transform understanding into action, creating environments where all minds can thrive.
