Dr Stratis Andreas Efthymiou

Dr Stratis Andreas Efthymiou is a sociologist with an interest in applying social research in politics, policy and practice. Stratis’ research is interdisciplinary and studies political determination, militarism, gender, radical movements and their impact on long-dragged conflicts. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Applied Social Sciences.

Stratis has policy expertise in the security sector reform gained through his work with the Cyprus Minister of Defence in 2015. He also possesses direct security and peacebuilding experience through his work with Berghof Foundation, SeeD and Interpeace at the Cyprus Peace Negotiations in Geneva, 2016-2017. He worked in conflict resolution with Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission in 2014, as well as in defense and corruption with the Transparency International – Defence and Security Programme.

Stratis has conducted fieldwork research in Cyprus and Northern Ireland. He worked with political and military leadership, in military barracks with officers and soldiers, radical right groups and internally displaced people. He holds a PhD in Sociology (2015), MSc in Comparative and Cross-Cultural Research Methods (2010) and a BA in Sociology (2008) from the University of Sussex.

Stratis convenes and lectures on undergraduate and postgraduate modules in radicalisation, research methods, sociology and criminology. He leads on the Policing, Security and Community Safety Prof Doc.

Stratis is interested in supervising students with research interests in:
