Workshop to highlight how apps can support teaching

London Met is exploring ways to harness technology to better meet students’ needs as it moves to a ‘digital first’ future.

Date: 16 June 2016

As part of London Met’s Staff Development Festival, which kicks off on Monday 27 June, Charl Fregona, Teaching Fellow, will be hosting a session on ‘Using apps for study.’

The presentation comes in conjunction with the recent revelation that social media has become the top source for young people finding the latest news updates.

Teaching Fellow Charl Fregona, said: "Social media are rewriting student approaches to learning and teaching. By harnessing the power of digital technologies to engage students in their learning, teaching becomes relevant, enjoyable and effective.

“This workshop helps staff to understand how to teach in ways that are relevant to today's students by tapping into the power of social media apps."

The two hour long workshop will take place in the Learning Centre at the Holloway campus on Tuesday 28 June at 11am. It will cover essential topics such as the guidelines on choosing reliable apps and also how a typical student interacts with apps. Booking is essential on the Eventbrite page. All attendees are encouraged to take a smart phone or a tablet with them.

Other activities in London Met’s 2016 Staff Development Festival, which will run from 27 June – 8 July, include jiu-jitsu, badminton, healthy body calculator and a visit to the roof of the Tower Building at the Holloway campus. With over 70 different activities planned, there really is something for everyone.

The Staff Development Festival aims to offer a wide range of personal and professional development opportunities that staff wouldn’t usually have the chance to access. It is also a chance for staff to get to know other departments they wouldn’t usually work with.

The Festival includes the University’s Annual Learning and Teaching Conference which will be held on 5 July. All staff are invited to attend the conference.

All information can be found on the Staff Development Festival page and is open to London Met staff only. All events are free and will conclude with a staff barbeque held in the Holloway courtyard on Friday 8 July at 4pm.
