A new pilot study from London Metropolitan University suggests immersive virtual reality could transform how universities support student well-being and academic performance

Immersive virtual reality mindfulness practices could help students overcome chronic procrastination, boost academic performance and improve their wellbeing, according to new research led by London Metropolitan University.
Many studies have established that academic procrastination – the voluntary delay of necessary tasks despite expecting negative consequences – remains a huge barrier to student success, contributing to drop-out rates and student disengagement.
While cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) remains the most popular intervention for chronic procrastination, researchers believe mindfulness could offer a compelling alternative to addressing these issues.
Mindfulness cultivates a deliberate awareness of the present moment and encourages an attitude of radical acceptance towards internal thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations.
The twelve-week pilot trial, published in Applied Psychology Research, tracked 30 UK-based undergraduate and postgraduate students using Meta Quest 3 headsets to access TRIPP, a VR mindfulness platform.
Participants, who were split across two groups, completed weekly 25-minute immersive sessions focused on goal setting, decision-making, present-moment focus, and breathwork, supported by an AI mindfulness app for independent practice between sessions.
The study used two groups to measure impact: an active group that began the VR mindfulness sessions immediately, and a delayed one that started later, allowing researchers to compare outcomes.
Across the trial period, researchers monitored participants’ heart rate, academic stress, procrastination, engagement, self-efficacy and mindfulness.
The study found that over time and across both groups, academic procrastination and stress greatly reduced and self-efficacy and engagement increased significantly as students took part in the mindfulness sessions. In the active group, academic stress reduced by approximately 40 per cent and academic procrastination reduced by around 29 per cent.
The standout statistic was cognitive mindfulness. The active group receiving VR mindfulness showed a marked improvement in this area, while the delayed group’s mindfulness scores also increased when receiving treatment.
This suggests employing these mindfulness tools in higher education settings could foster long-term academic engagement by reducing student procrastination.
Corresponding author Professor Samantha Banbury, Senior Psychology Lecturer at London Metropolitan University, said:
“Research looking at mindfulness and academic procrastination is gaining momentum but registered trials like this, particularly those involving VR, are still rare.
“While these findings provide encouraging support for integrating VR and AI-based tools within higher education, the precise mechanisms driving these changes require further investigation.
“Ultimately, a deeper understanding achieved through larger, more diverse samples will help us design targeted interventions that help students truly thrive at university.”
The study was conducted by London Met in partnership with Cadiz University in Spain. Its authors include London Met’s Olaide Phillips and Professor Chris Chandler, and Professor Javier del Rio Olvera of Cadiz University.
Why VR mindfulness?
While VR mindfulness doesn’t suit everyone, as some individuals may experience issues like motion sickness, its immersive environment can provide an excellent way to practice mindfulness. Some people have even claimed it has “transformed” their lives, such as NHS patient Charlie Jenkinson.
Professor Banbury explained: “The combination of immersive visuals, accompanying sound, and reduced exposure to external visual and environmental distractions may help participants maintain attention and reduce competing sources of distraction during mindfulness practice.
“In this way, VR may offer a distinctive sensory environment that supports engagement with mindfulness rather than simply delivering conventional mindfulness content through a screen.”
