Uncertain States, the lens-based collective founded at The Cass, announce dates for annual Open Call.
Cass Alumni-led group Uncertain States (UCS) are proud to announce their 2016 Open Call for lens-based artists' work.
Uncertain States co-founders David George, Spencer Rowell and Fiona Yaron-Field have teamed up with curator Mary George to ask new artists to contribute to the passion of the Uncertain States project and help them find the very best contemporary lens-based art.
The submitted work will be curated by an exceptional panel of selectors and exhibited in the heart of the East End at Arts Pavilion Mile End. Each judge will select their own 'best of show' and offer the reasons why the work has inspired them. The nine chosen artists will be featured in Uncertain States Issue 27, which will be distributed to locations including: V&A Museum London, Turner Contemporary Margate, Arnolfini Bristol, Impressions Gallery Bradford, Ikon Gallery and Library of Birmingham, Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art Newcastle, Open Eye Gallery Liverpool and Norwich University of the Arts. This special edition will explore the curation of the Open Call, include biographies and statements from the artists, offering insight into the selection process.
Uniquely, UCS have put together an autonomous group of selectors for this process. They include artists Bob and Roberta Smith, Susan Derges, Joy Gregory, Carthy Lomax and James Russell Cant; Writer and critic Sue Steward; Shoair Mavlian, a curator at Tate Modern and Johanna Neurath, commissioning editor at Thames & Hudson publishers.
Uncertain States was founded by David George, Spencer Rowell and Fiona Yaron-Field while they were studying MA Photography at The Cass.
The closing date for submissions is 17 August 2016. Please go to the Uncertain States website for conditions of entry.
