Recent MSc Finance graduate Muzammil Al was pleased with his recent offer of a job at Ignis Asset Management as a valuation control analyst. Muzammil enjoyed his time during his course and got in touch with us to share his experience.

What is your role and what does it involve?

My role is primarily concerned with compiling the profit-and-loss accounts from products traded by the front office on a daily basis. I will be working in close contact with the front office and its traders and will be involved in valuations and the pricing of new products.

How has your course helped you prepare for the world of work?

The core modules that I studied helped me understand the main underlying theoretical concepts and its applications of financial products and theories behind pricing models. My course was broad and focused around areas in banking and corporate finance. This has opened up a whole new frontier of job prospects and careers which I could choose to go into.

What was the highlight of being at London Met?

London Met has highly educated and experienced lecturers, who have industry practice. This is a competitive advantage for students like me who strive to learn and make the most of studies by asking questions and discussing the main topics to better prepare for exams and for the future.

Any advice for students looking for a job/general study tips?

  • recognise your own key and core skills and make sure you sell them in interviews

  • register with recruitment agents and prioritise what type of job/industry you're looking to go into

  • go the extra mile and brush up on your IT literacy, eg Excel spreadsheet/Powerpoint presentation skills.
