Date: 27 June 2018
Cass aumna Majeda Clarke was among the winners of a prestigious New Designers Award at this year's New Designers Exhibition, on 27 June.
New Designers 2018 unveils the imaginations set to shape the design world of tomorrow. Over two weeks, and spanning every discipline in modern making, the event presents the work of more than 3,000 hand-picked design talents currently in education.
Majeda graduated from the Cass’s Textile Design course in 2017 and as well as prestigious exhibitions such as the Aram ‘Hands On’ show has developed her professional practice to encompass hand woven textiles from her own studio alongside working with specialist weavers in both the UK and Bangladesh.
The New Designers ‘One Year In’ Development Award comes with it;
- £500 Moo.com credit
- Design Nation - 1 year free membership
- Plus a Showcase Exhibition at the National Centre for Craft & Design
- Design Trust - £500 worth of online training
The judges looked for originality of design and creativity and quality of making within a cohesive collection of work. The winner was required to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of their work.
With her cultural background as a starting point Majeda seeks sustainable production methods that celebrate the regional weave techniques found in Bangladesh. Her workshop in Deptford houses her own looms and she can be contacted through her website;
Of her work she says;
“There is something about the act of making cloth by hand that connects me to a long line of weavers throughout history who have sat in front of a loom. It is an ancient tradition that is vanishing in a world of mass production and manufactured perfection.”

Majeda recently spoke to the The Arts Council about her work and how London Met helped her change her career.
