BA Illustration students at London Metropolitan University will have the chance to study under famous illustrator Bruce Ingman following his appointment to the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media and Design

Bruce, who studied under the legendary Quentin Blake, has joined The Cass as a Senior Lecturer in Illustration

His first book, ‘When Martha's Away’, was published in 1996 to huge critical acclaim, winning the prestigious Mother Goose Award for Best British Newcomer to Children's Picture Books. Bruce also scooped the V&A National Art Library Illustration Award for the book.

He said: “I'm thrilled to be joining The Cass in what seems to be an exciting period of transformation. I hope I can contribute to helping make the Faculty a leading international centre for the study of illustration.”

Bruce has enjoyed an illustrious career and will bring a lot to the teaching experience at London Met. His partnership with author Allan Ahlberg has yielded many successes, including The Runaway Dinner, Previously and The Pencil (Winner of the Redhouse Children's Picture Book Award, Time Magazine Children's Book of the Year).

Charlotte Gorse, Academic Leader of Design at London Met, said: “I'm really excited that Bruce chose to join The Cass. His work is both playful and elegant - a hard combination for any designer - and his approach to lecturing is joyful and excitable.

“I am certain that students working with him will quickly become infected by his sense of curiosity in each and every creative project. Bruce passing on this skill alone, alongside some excellent professional connections, will ensure that our Illustration course continues to go from strength to strength.”

As well as teaching London Met illustration students, Bruce, who studied at the Royal College of Art, has a busy summer ahead of him. He will be appearing at book festivals Story Fest and the West Cork Literary Festival, as well as exhibiting at the Take Five Illustrators exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
