Hothouse 2016 News from the School of Art, Architecture and Design

Free workshops with leading creative practitioners and experts during the Cass Summer Show Part 1.

The Cass Hothouse is once again offering visitors to the Cass Summer Show a choice of five free workshops with leading experts from the design and branding industry. This year we're excited to announce an exciting schedule including an experimental sound and vision workshop with Clayton Welham, a drawing workshop with Le Gun, 3D graphic spaces with Anna Lomax, a graphic design workshop with Europa and a branding workshop with Baxter and Bailey.

Hothouse is an initiative in our visual communications area that enables dialogue between design education and industry. It's a space that sits outside of the curriculum, yet feeds into it. A place for students, staff, alumni and industry to explore the multifaceted area of graphic design and illustration through partnered research and practice, Hothouse informs and evolves teaching and learning practice through ongoing dialogue, publishing and events.

This year The Cass Hothouse explores the theme of support.

The Summer Show is a pivotal moment where the shift from education to industry suddenly comes into sharp focus. We reflect on our learning experiences and we look forward to an unknown professional landscape. This is a time of both anticipation and anxiety, and therefore it is particularly poignant to be questioning what supports us as students, educators and designers?

Inspired by the discourse presented in Celine Condorelli’s Support Structures we'll be exploring what collaborates, props, assists, frames, holds up, sustains, encourages, corroborates, stands behind, strengthens and underpins. We will be asking questions such as:

1. What does it mean to collaborate?
2. What underpins a practice?
3. How does design education assist the transition to industry?
4. How does industry support education?
5. How can the modes of exhibition, framing and display be re-imagined?
6. How can design strengthen the local community?

Throughout the show, Hothouse is running free workshops with industry experts and practitioners. Whether you're an industry professional, a student or someone with a passing interest in design who wants to know more – all are welcome to take part.
