Our very own Margaret Gold was invited to participate in a workshop at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Birmingham on 24th February 2015 entitled Quo Vadis Olympism: a Multidisciplinary Exploration. Margaret’s well researched presentation summarised some 15 years of research on the Olympic Games identifying the key themes that emerge from an examination of the agendas which motivate cities to bid and stage mega-events such as the summer Olympics Games.
The workshop brought together over thirty researchers working on Olympics and Mega Events and was organised as part of the Institute’s Politics and Sports Mega-Events research strand. The discussion ranged over the politics of the Olympics (legacy, the IOC 2020 vision, Dutch Olympic bids, Canadian attitudes to the Games), Olympic discourses (disability, Olympism, security and athletes), and Olympic heritage (museums, posters, athletes’ memories). Researchers came from linguistics, archaeology, social science, history and the arts.
