Social Work graduate Grace Babb celebrated at the Barbican with her 13-year-old son after achieving a first-class degree and securing her first job in the sector

Grace Babb graduated from London Metropolitan University this week with a First-Class honours degree in Social Work, having already secured her first job as a social worker.
The 33-year-old returned to education by enrolling on the University’s foundation year course after working as a nursery practitioner. During her four years of studying, she balanced full-time studying with family life.
She celebrated graduation at the Barbican Centre alongside her family, including her 13-year-old son. On her journey back into education, she said:
“I left school at 16 and had my son when I was 20. I wanted to make a better life for myself and for him. It’s all for him really.
“I’ve had family struggles, me and my son both have health issues and I’ve not worked while I’ve studied full-time. It’s been tough but I’ve had so much support from my partner and my family,” she said.
Four years ago, Grace was working as a nursery nurse and decided to return to education when the Covid pandemic hit.
On the emotions of graduating, she said: “When you first start studying you feel like you’re never going to see the end goal of graduating. But we’re here and it’s been so emotional today.”
This month, Grace secured her ASYE (Assessed and Supported Year in Employment), which is a highly-recommended 12-month programme for newly qualified social workers in the UK.
On studying at London Met, she said: “I felt empowered studying as a mum here. I can’t fault the University, they’ve been more than supportive.”
