The London Met Interior Design Placement returned in March, offering students a unique opportunity to experience the dynamic world of professional interior design.
Date: 9 May 2024
Now in its third successful year, the Interior Design Placement is led by Craig Hallums, Space Planning and Projects Co-ordinator, in collaboration with the University's Estates Team.
Each year, participating students are presented with a live design brief, challenging them to develop creative solutions to real-world scenarios. This year’s project centred around hypothetical learning and social commons using the ground and first floor communal space at our soon-to-be-opened Shoreditch campus, an exciting new addition to London Met’s ever-evolving estate.
The placement allowed students to immerse themselves in the design process from start to finish, including concept development, spatial planning, and material selection. They were tasked with reimagining the communal space to enhance both its functionality and visual appeal, aiming to create a welcoming and engaging environment for future campus users.
A key highlight of the experience was the opportunity for students to pitch their proposals to a panel of university stakeholders, offering invaluable professional feedback and helping students to hone their presentation skills and develop confidence in articulating design ideas.
Craig Hallums, who oversees the initiative, commented: "Each year, we are consistently impressed by the creativity and professionalism our students bring to the table. The placement is not only a chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom, it’s also a stepping stone into the design industry."
