We are developing our mentor training programme further to ensure that all parties get the most out of the mentoring experience and to improve the collaborative learning approach to teacher development. 

While still subject to validation, our aim is that the programme will follow a three-part model, with Part 1 the mentor induction, and Parts 2 and 3 leading towards Master’s Level accreditation. There will also be regular mentor update sessions, online, for mentors who have undertaken the induction programme.

These courses will be offered free to partner schools.

The new structure will look like this:

• Part 1: Mentor Induction: for anybody new to mentoring or new to the London Met systems, giving you the basic ‘need to know’, as well as advice on how to avoid pitfalls. During the Part 1 session you will be invited to sign up for Parts 2/3. This is a more in-depth programme offered free to partner schools. Successful completion of Parts 2 and 3 will lead to 20 credits at Master’s Level.
• Mentoring Updates: regular update sessions with the university team, for those who have completed Part 1, to inform about what is new and about upcoming opportunities
• Parts 2 and 3: Advanced Mentoring at Master’s Level:
  • Part 2 offers a more in-depth look at best practices in mentoring, allowing a more detailed look at some of key areas, including Stages of Learning in ITE, helping a ‘stuck trainee’, avoiding compartmentalisation: linking academic and practical work; reflexivity, criticality and creativity. This course will also prepare participants to undertake.
  • Part 3 follows on from the learning undertaken at Part 2 and involves a written output, linking theory with practical experience and with programme development in the school, which could also serve as a bridge to a wider MA in Teaching or in Education.
