Our Commitment to Inclusion
At London Met, our commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and equitable environment is central to our Mission and Values.
The Supreme Court Ruling: On 16 April 2025, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the term “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 should be interpreted as referring to biological sex. While this legal clarification may influence how single-sex spaces are defined under the law, it does not change our responsibilities to support all members of our community, including transgender and non-binary individuals.
Our Next Steps: We await further guidance from relevant regulatory bodies, including the Office for Students and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, and will review and update our policies and practices as appropriate to ensure legal compliance and to uphold our values.

Our Commitment: In recognition of the complexity and sensitivity of this topic, and the range of perspectives it evokes, London Metropolitan University affirms its commitment to academic freedom, freedom of speech, and the principles of equality and inclusion. We actively work with our community, including Staff Networks and students, to align with our principles.
Transgender and non-binary staff and students remain an integral part of our university community. We are committed to ensuring that London Met remains a place where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, including that related to gender identity, are not tolerated.
We will continue to engage, consult, and review our practices to ensure that all members of our community are treated with respect and fairness.
