Through successful initiatives such as the London Met Digital Citizenship project and international workshops, Prof. Jan Bamford’s research on teaching and learning in culturally plural environments has positively enhanced educational experiences and opportunities for higher education students in the UK and beyond.
Prof. Bamford and colleagues have delivered key insights into students’ interactions, engagement, and communication patterns in culturally diverse classrooms. Growing from funded research across several UK institutions to collaborative international projects, this research has led to educational and social impact at institutional, national and international levels.
By building and encouraging rich understandings of how students from minority ethnic backgrounds and international students experience higher education, this research has effected change amongst university staff and students. Feedback from international students for research-informed modules on intercultural communication and business communication at London Met, for example, confirms an increased awareness of cultural difference and transformed attitudes to working with perceived “others”.
Prof. Bamford’s national and international interventions beyond London Met, meanwhile, include workshops on teaching in a culturally plural environment and students’ understanding of cultural difference.
