Xi’an University of Posts and Telecommunications (XUPT) recently hosted an official welcoming ceremony for the inaugural cohort of students enrolled in the jointly offered master’s programme in Business Information Technology – a partnership between XUPT and London Metropolitan University.
Wearing specially designed London Met T‑shirts - rose pink or dark blue, printed in both Chinese and English - the new XUPT students arrived from across China to the historic northern city of Xi’an, once the capital of ancient dynasties. They received London Met welcome packs and listened to speeches from teaching staff, university representatives, and invited guests from abroad.
“The programme represents a significant step for the university to leverage its strength in information and communication technologies and establish a high‑level international talent‑training system,” said Yu Zhiwei, a student who is also the General Manager of China Mobile Gansu Computing Power Company.
“It aims to cultivate versatile high‑level talents with international vision, technical skills, and business acumen,” he told the incoming cohort.
Officially recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education, the programme will be taught primarily in English and is designed to develop future technology and business leaders from a range of sectors and backgrounds.
The collaboration symbolises a deeper partnership between two institutions that share a commitment to innovation, opportunity, and global education. Part of the course will be delivered in person by London Met staff.
“Through complementary strengths and in‑depth collaboration, the two universities have created an international learning platform tailored specifically for you,” Dr. Han Jiangwei, a Vice President of XUPT, said at the ceremony.
“It allows you to experience an international teaching model, broaden your global perspective, and earn a master’s degree ... all without leaving China.”
Many students had arrived in Xi’an only the day before, and they were eager to begin their studies. Before the formal programme started, XUPT organised ice‑breaker activities to help the cohort get to know one another.
“Pursuing education while working is not easy. In the future you may have to sacrifice leisure time, study late after a busy day’s work, and constantly balance career, family, and studies. But remember, growing pains often herald a new beginning,” Professor Shan Hongmei told the students.
"This initiative represents an exciting new chapter in the partnership between our two institutions," said Dr Wendy Sloane, Deputy Dean of the School of Computing and Digital Media, who travelled to Xi'an for the ceremony.
"It underscores our shared values, strengthens our longstanding relationship, and demonstrates how new opportunities can be achieved through collaboration and a common vision for the future.”
