HRH The Duke of York has formally agreed to become Patron of London Metropolitan University taking over from his father, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duke of York follows on from 60 years of Patronage by The Duke of Edinburgh and an even longer line of Royal Patronage starting with Prince Albert in the 1850s and his support for ‘The Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men’, a precursor to the London Metropolitan University of today.

The Duke of York has a strong interest in supporting young people and is already a Patron of a number of charities and organisations in East London.

His Royal Highness commented: "I am delighted to become Patron of London Metropolitan University.

"I have seen for myself the important work the University does in supporting all parts of the community in achieving their educational goals by developing the necessary skills to transform lives and build careers."

Professor Malcolm Gillies, Vice-Chancellor of London Metropolitan University added, "We are delighted that The Duke of York can continue our Royal Patronage into the future and the University community is excited about the commitment and energy he will bring to this role."

London Metropolitan University will be holding an event in the near future where will award The Duke of York with his Patronage and where an honorary degree will be presented.
