Students at London Metropolitan University have the chance to start their own business thanks to a competition run by the Student Enterprise Programme.

Applications are now open for the 2013 London Met Student Business Competition, with all full-time students, part-time students and recent alumni eligible to enter. With a total prize fund of £29,000, the competition seeks to unearth and foster the best business ideas from across the entire University.

In addition to cash injections, winners will receive up to 12 months’ free office space in The Hatchery, London Met’s dedicated facility for fast-tracking student enterprises. A healthy support package – which includes access to training events for young start-ups, computing and printing facilities, access to business mentors, training in media marketing and more – is also on offer.

Now in its eleventh year, previous participants of the Student Business Competition have gone on to find prominent success in business. Leonardo Acero, who won the competition in 2010, leveraged his triumph to turn an innovative concept for a guidebook souvenir into the highly successful 24 Hours in London.

“I learnt so much through the Student Enterprise Programme,” said Leonardo, “including how to produce a proper Business Plan, how to give effective presentations and how to distinguish an idea from a real business opportunity.”

The competition is another example of the focus on employability and support students receive at London Met. So, if you have a great idea for a business and the entrepreneurial drive to push it forward, why not apply? The deadline for application forms is 9.00am on Monday, 18 March 2013.
