Colour Palace gets go ahead

Planning permission granted for Dulwich Pavilion designed by Cass alumnus Yinka Ilori with Pricegore for LFA competition.

Date: 05 February 2018

Colour Palace, the winning design for the Dulwich Pavilion with Dulwich Picture Gallery designed by Pricegore and Cass Furniture and Product Design Alumnus Yinka Ilori has received planning permission.

In a lively celebration of colour, pattern and light, this temporary outdoor structure was selected from a field of 150 entries to win the competition, which was co-hosted by the LFA (London Festival of Architecture) and the Gallery at the start of last year. Timed to coincide with the launch  of this year's festival, it will open at Dulwich Picture Gallery on 31st May with the first of a summer of free Lates. Throughout the Festival, the pavilion will offer a unique platform for a range of events as well as a refreshing welcome and orientation space.

Pricegore and Yinka Ilori’s Colour Palace draws upon both European and African cultural traditions, creating a design that could be relevant to, and representative of, multicultural London. Dutch wax prints on display in a Lagos market, and mirrored in London’s ‘Little Lagos’ in nearby Peckham, inspired the bold geometric pattern of the pavilion, which will create a powerful contrast alongside the Grade II* listed gallery building, designed by Sir John Soane. Each side of the timber louvres forming the façade is painted a different colour, creating shifting layers of pattern when viewed from different perspectives.

Jennifer Scott, Sackler Director at Dulwich Picture Gallery, said, “Together with our partners, the London Festival of Architecture, we are thrilled to have been granted planning permission for ‘The Colour Palace’. This vibrant temporary pavilion, designed by our competition winners PriceGore + Yinka Ilori, captures the joyfulness of experiencing great art and architecture, and promises to be London’s most exciting cultural destination this summer!”
