Cass students from the Bespoke and Make Studio display their work at the Contemporary Applied Arts gallery.

Jewellery and Silversmithing students from The Cass are exhibiting musically inspired work at the Contemporary Applied Arts gallery until 15 February.
Students from the Bespoke and Make Studio were each invited to create a piece of work inspired by and created to reflect a piece of music for the exhibition titled Not[e]able Objects.
Working in collaboration with the Hayes vinyl factory, each student selected a song or piece of music which was both recorded on the EMI label and produced and printed in the Hayes factory. The expanse of this archive provided a huge range of musical inspiration from Chopin to The Sex Pistols.
As well as drawing inspiration from music, each piece was created for public sale, covering the consumer period preceding Valentine’s Day.
This was a crucial element for students, developing the skills to tailor their creative output for an increasingly important consumer market.
Josie Wood, creator of the necklace Teardrop, inspired by The Man in the Station by John Martyn commented on the importance of the project in the development of the professional practice. “It is self-led” she said, “We have to write our own brief, create our own deadlines and source and buy our materials.”
There are twenty works in the exhibition, showcasing 2nd and 3rd year work, displaying a range of mediums from etching and enamelling to silversmithing, leatherwork and woodwork.
Student Chris Townsend, who crafted A Start and an End a sterling silver and vegetarian leather belt, inspired by Pink Floyd’s Time, described the exhibition as “a really good opportunity” stating, “for us as craftsmen, the CAA is the number one gallery to exhibit in in London”.
All the pieces on display are for sale, with one, to date, a gold bracelet by Patryk Fic inspired by The Beatles song The Taxman.
This Saturday there will be a private view of the exhibition where the inspirational pieces of music will be played to accompany their related object.
The exhibition is on until Sunday 15 February.
