London Metropolitan University has been awarded the Athena Swan Bronze Renewal Award by Advance HE, recognising the University's continued commitment to advancing gender equality and creating a more inclusive environment for staff and students.
The renewal builds on London Met's original Bronze Award, achieved in 2021, and reflects the progress made in embedding equality, diversity and inclusion across the institution.
In its assessment, the Advance HE panel praised London Met's strong leadership and institutional commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, alongside its robust governance arrangements.
The panel also recognised the University's collaborative approach, highlighting how staff feedback and lived experiences had shaped both the self-assessment process and the University's action plan. It further commended London Met's strong intersectional approach, noting that it provides a strong foundation for continued progress.
Marva de la Coudray, Director of the Centre for Teaching Enhancement, Director of the Centre for Equity and Inclusion, and Chair of the Equality, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, said:
"This award reflects the dedication of colleagues across London Met who continue to champion equality, opportunity and belonging in everything they do.
"I would like to thank the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team and colleagues from across our academic schools and professional services whose expertise, insight and commitment made this achievement possible. It is an important milestone in delivering the ambitions set out in our Strategic Plan and builds on our Disability Confident Leader accreditation achieved in 2025."
Chloe Milano, Executive Director of People and Chair of the Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter Self-Assessment Team, said:
"This is a significant achievement for London Met and a testament to the commitment and collaboration of colleagues across the University.
"While we are proud to receive this recognition, we know that meaningful change comes through continued action. We will build on the strong foundations we have established as we continue creating a culture where everyone can thrive.
“The Bronze Renewal Award recognises the progress London Met has made while providing a framework for further advancing gender equality across the University.”
The Centre for Equity and Inclusion is now preparing the University's submissions for the Race Equality Charter and Stonewall Proud Employers programmes demonstrating the significant progress made over the past 18 months in advancing the University's commitments to inclusion, equity and belonging, and strengthening its position as a socially just university.
