Graphic Design student, Atenea, tells us about life at London Met

Hello, can you introduce yourself?

Hi guys! My name is Atenea Lopez and welcome to London Metropolitan University's YouTube channel. I'm from Colombia. I'm studying Graphic Design and I'm going to be answering some of the most frequently asked questions about studying in London at London Metropolitan University.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to paint, I play sports and I'm learning how to play the ukulele and piano. One of my favorite things about living in London is that you can go to exhibitions, to museums, and I have this Student Art Pass that I recommend you to get it if you are an artist or if you just love art.

What advice can you give someone thinking of studying your course?

The best advice that I can give you is to come with some knowledge of Adobe. All the programs like Photoshop, InDesign, Premier Pro, Illustrator, because you will need them a lot. In my case, it was one of my weaknesses because I came from a background of studying practical art. Other advice is don't be afraid of the language. For me, it was a bit worrying. But little by little, I've been learning more English. I'm still learning English. Being in contact with English speakers has allowed me to improve my English skills.

How does London Met bring out your creativity?

I've been able to meet people from all over the world and I learn about their cultures and how they see their lives. This gives you other points of view that help you enhance your creativity.

Do you get to attend class trips?

Yes, of course. Since foundation year, we've been going to museums, galleries, exhibitions, everything related to art. Thanks to the trips, you can get inspired and collect reference for your work.

Are there opportunities to showcase your work at London Met?

Yes, of course. In fact, a few weeks ago, I've been part of the Maker's Market. I don't know if you've heard about that but it's a really nice project for the University, where they train you and teach you how to sell products, how much money you can sell your products for. I mean, some people there, they gave you advice on how to do it. I bought the card machine and it was really good. You can display your products or your service, sometimes at the University or in some markets.

What is it like studying a creative degree?

Studying a creative degree is fine because you get to choose whatever you want to study. As long as you follow the brief, you are only limited by your imagination.

What is your favorite module so far?

My favourite module I think is my major project because after everything that I've been learning for these past four years, I have the knowledge to carry on for my final project which is a short video about student immigration and I hope you see the video when I put it on YouTube. I hope you will watch the video.

What's the best thing about studying at London Met?

Good question! Fulfilling my dream of studying a creative degree and in this way, I'm surrounded by wonderful people. Qualified teachers who are interested in your progess. Surrounding myself with many cultures. It's as if I was travelling to several countries at the same time.

What is the campus location like?

The campus is in Aldgate, close to Liverpool Street and Monument, It's great for creative minds, because you have Brick Lane, Whitechapel Gallery, and others, there's more galleries. You have stationary shops, material shops, and different cultures. Basically, the campus is surrounded by art, crafts, and creativity and resources for you to grow as an artist. Okay, this is the last question, guys.

Why did you choose your course?

It's a funny question actually. Well, when I applied to the University I wanted to study fine art, but in foundation year I decided to change it for animation and illustration. In the first year, we did graphic design as well. So when I started to design and make posters, I decided to change it to graphic design. Okay, guys. That's all, we're done! I just want to say thank you, and I hope this will help you if you are thinking about studying in London at London Metropolitan University. And yes, I hope to see you at the University. Besitos, ciao!
