London Metropolitan University launches new scholarship to support UK citizens living abroad

London Metropolitan University has announced a new scholarship designed to support UK citizens living overseas to come to the UK to pursue higher education.

Date: 6 March 2026

The Global British Citizens Scholarship, available for students beginning their studies in the 2026/27 academic year, provides a significant tuition fee reduction for British citizens who are classified as international fee payers.

Under current regulations, UK citizens living abroad are often categorised as international fee payers, creating a substantial financial barrier to studying in the UK. As part of London Metropolitan University’s longstanding commitment to inclusion and opportunity, the new scholarship removes this barrier by allowing British citizens overseas to study at domestic fee levels, regardless of where they reside.

The scholarship applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Undergraduate students will benefit from reductions of up to £11,465 per year, equivalent to £34,395 over a three-year course, while postgraduate students will also receive generous support.

The scholarship joins a range of others offered by the university, including the EU Bright Futures Scholarship, which offers fee reductions to domestic rates for EU citizens, and the International Bright Futures Scholarship.

Professor Gary Davies, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at London Metropolitan University, said: We’re increasingly hearing from UK citizens living overseas who want to return to the UK for higher education but are effectively priced out by international fee classifications. The Global British Citizens Scholarship responds to this reality and recognises the changing patterns of mobility among British families and professionals. It ensures that British students abroad are given the opportunity to return to the UK and access higher education at London Met."
