Legendary former-Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger is joining the BA Journalism teaching team. He’ll be leading a series of workshops with second-year students.
Date: 22 February 2026
Rusbridger, who held the Guardian’s editorship for 20 years, will be exploring how state power works in the UK, and its relationship with journalism.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning news veteran approached London Met Journalism Course Leader Wendy Sloane to see how he could contribute. Teaching on the Journalism, Public Interest and Power module was a perfect fit.
Under Rusbridger’s leadership, the Guardian fought – and won – a series of high-profile battles against powerful vested interests who wanted to keep secrets.
From Wikileaks and the Snowden revelations to phone hacking at the News of the World, he built a reputation as an editor who put truth and transparency front and centre of his mission as a journalist.
Since leaving the Guardian, Rusbridger’s been active in Higher Education, spending six years as Principal of Lady Margaret College at Oxford University, where he chaired the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
Under his leadership, the college set up a Foundation Year scheme for young people from under-represented backgrounds. Most recently, he was editor of Prospect Magazine.
Looking forward to his teaching at London Met, Rusbridger said: "In a world where people increasingly don't know who or what to trust, it's never been more vital to recruit and train professional journalists. I'm delighted to be joining the team at London Metropolitan University and helping to nurture a new generation of much-needed editorial talent.”
Course Leader Wendy Sloane could not be more pleased: “We are thrilled to welcome Alan to our team and appreciate his strong commitment to diversity and creating pathways for social mobility, which is one reason he chose London Met.
“Our Journalism students will have the opportunity to learn from a veteran journalist who understands the importance of speaking truth to power. We also look forward to Alan delivering talks that will be open to the entire University.”
