Social Work Bursary
The University currently has a limited number of Social Work Bursaries, which may be awarded to students on the Social Work BSc and Social Work MSc courses.
The bursary for the Social Work BSc is not income-assessed and does not need to be repaid. Eligible students will be able to receive this bursary in addition to their funding from Student Finance England.
The bursary for Social Work MSc students consists of income-assessed and non-income-assessed elements, and does not need to be repaid.

Eligibility criteria
- You must be studying either toward the Social Work BSc Social Work course and have progressed into your second year of study, or
- You must be studying toward the Social Work MSc Social Work course and have fulfilled conditions of course offer.
- *Students who satisfy other residence conditions may also be able to receive awards. Please email the Student Money and Accommodation Advice team for further information.
Restrictions and exemptions
- Students on the Social Work BSc cannot receive the bursary until they enter their second year of study.
Students Finance England
In regard to SFE funding:
- Undergraduate students can apply for SFE funding as well, as the SWK bursary does not cover tuition fees.
- Postgraduate students can apply for SFE funding if they are only getting the Placement Travel Allowance from NHSBSA

- You cannot receive SWB tuition fee support when you’re an undergraduate. You’re responsible for paying your tuition fees. You can apply for a tuition fee loan through Student Finance England if you need support.

Healthcare and social work
You cannot get a Postgraduate Master’s Loan if you:
- are eligible for an NHS bursary
- get a Social Work Bursary - unless you only get a Placement Travel Allowance
How to apply
- For students on the Social Work BSc, depending on your performance during your first year of study, your tutor will advise if you can apply for a Social Work Bursary, and the procedure for doing so.
- Students on the Social Work MSc will be notified by the University if they have been allocated a bursary and how to apply for it.
- All students should submit the bursary application, irrespective of whether they are nominated as they might be eligible for the Placement Travel Allowance refer to the NHSBSA Social Work Bursary guide.
- To make an application they will need to create an account on the MyFunding system.
