Overview

The course prepares students to educate and care for children in the Early Years (0-7) in a range of contexts, with an emphasis on working in multilingual, multicultural and urban children’s centres and schools. Successful completion of the course will lead to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. The course will also cover many aspects of the requirements for Early Years Professional Status. A key aim of the course is the development of current concepts and ideas related to children, child development and pedagogy. The course will provide reflective, active and collaborative learning opportunities that integrate theoretical principles with practical applications and enable students to reflect critically on their own practice.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 modules include:

  • Key Subject/Study Knowledge and Skills for Teaching
  • Child Development and Observation
  • Aspects of Early Years Play, Learning and Communication
  • The Early Years Curriculum
  • Introduction to Key Stage 1 Curriculum
  • Professional Studies and Placement

Level 2 modules include:

  • Key Stage 1 Curriculum: Maths and Science
  • Key Stage 1 Curriculum: Foundation Subjects
  • Language and ICT in Multilingual Contexts
  • Professional Studies
  • Professional Placement

Level 3 modules include:

  • Research Methods and Project Preparation
  • Curriculum Studies
  • Meeting the needs of every child – and multi-professional approach
  • Professional Studies
  • Professional Placement

Assessment

Approximately 20 words maximum, for example: You are assessed via placement experience, video projects, presentations, essays, online portfolios and a final dissertation.

Careers

The qualification leads to a career as an Early Years teacher. Students in previous cohorts have progressed directly into work, sometimes at their final placement setting.

Professional accreditation / exemption

The training period comes to an end on successful completion of their first year as a Newly Qualified Teachers.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements you will have 240 points at A levels (or equivalent). In addition, you should have GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in English, Maths and a Science subject. An Admissions interview is compulsory for all entrants to this course.
