Overview

This vocational degree course provides you with an excellent grounding in language, culture mediation and translation. It equips you with such transferable professional skills as required by the translation industry and also imparts you with knowledge of translation methods, procedures and e-translation tools.

You will learn to translate multi-media texts such as advertisements, comic strips, songs and films and documents from specialist areas such as Finance, Law, IT and Medicine.

You will also familiarise yourself with interpreting skills in various business settings.
This course offers English language combined with French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Portuguese, German, Polish or Russian.

The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

Course contents

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Translation, language and culture
  • Information tools for linguists
  • Describing language
  • 1st or 2nd Foreign Language
  • Intercultural communication

Level 2 topics include:

  • Translation process and procedures
  • Text and culture
  • Managing translation
  • 1st or 2nd Foreign Language
  • Electronic tools for translation

Level 3 topics include:

  • Working in the professional environment
  • Specialist translation domains
  • Interpreting skills
  • Translation project
  • Translating multi-media

Assessment

Students are assessed via coursework, class test, exam, individual and group presentation, translation portfolio, translation project.

Careers

Professional accreditation/exemption

The BA Translation course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Linguists which awards exemptions from paper 1 of the Diploma in Translation.

We are also a full member of CIUTI (Conférence Internationale d’Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes).

 

Collaborative and international links

We have collaborative links with the EU Directorate General for Translation, Moscow State University, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and the British Council.

We are also members of Routes into Languages (Capital L) and the National Network for Translation.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 260 points from two A levels, one of which must be in a foreign language. Alternative qualifications will be considered, such as residence abroad or a bilingual background. A good command of English is required, as evidenced by interview, test or by appropriate certification.
Entry into year 2 or 3 will be considered on an individual basis.
