Overview

From Facebook to YouTube, social media has become one of the most dynamic and fast changing sectors in the digital media landscape. The BA Social Media will equip you with the skills and expertise to develop a career in one of the most exciting areas of media production and management. Drawing on London Metropolitan University’s internationally recognised expertise in Media Studies and Digital Media, the course combines practical social media development and management skills underpinned by theoretical engagement with participatory digital culture, viral marketing, and online community development.  This brand new course is tailored to enable you to develop your career in the emerging social media sector.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to digital media
  • Media, culture and society
  • Social media production
  • Participatory culture

Level 2 topics include:

  • Digital practice and research
  • Digital culture
  • Web design
  • Political economy of the media
  • Community management and development

Level 3 topics include:

  • Digital creativity
  • Managing new media projects
  • Social media project
  • New marketing strategies
  • Multimedia journalism

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, individual and group research projects, media practice project, and a final dissertation.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have at least 280 points, including two or more A levels, a Level 3 Advanced Diploma (or equivalent). English Language GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) is also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students who have appropriate Access or preparatory courses or appropriate work experience, or those without formal qualifications who are able to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, and the ability to benefit from higher education.
