Overview

This course provides the technical expertise and conceptual understanding needed to build a career in the making and maintenance of the guitar family of instruments.

The workshop modules will teach you how to build quality instruments, and at Honours Level students are encouraged to experiment with design and even prototype innovative projects. There are also workshops for repairing, regulating and restoring a range of musical instruments.

In addition, you will be studying musical instrument history, design, acoustics and technical drawing.

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Practical Instrument Making Workshop

  • Materials Science
  • Instrument Maintenance & Repair

Level 3 topics include:

  • Practical Instrument Making Project
  • Dissertation
  • Instrument Conservation
  • Instrument Finishing
Assessment
You are assessed via essays, workshop reports, individual practical projects and a final dissertation.

Career opportunities

Most graduates enter the music industry and many enjoy careers rising to senior and influential positions in the industry, both in the UK and abroad. Many graduates have found work as Instrument Makers, Repairers, Restorers and Conservators in established businesses or on a self- employed basis. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Professional accreditation

Graduates may apply for full membership of the Institute of Musical Instrument Technology.

Collaborative and international links

We have strong links with professionals in the field, especially instrument makers, repairers, museum and commercial conservators and instrument suppliers.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 240 points from two A levels. All other qualifications are considered on an individual basis. You should also have a keen interest in musical instruments and music. This course is also available as a 4-year extended degree, the first year of which is the Foundation Year Art, Media, Design.
