Overview

The course offers a lively and professional introduction to the practices and ideas of journalism. Students cover breaking news in our newsroom, develop a range of writing skills for different media outlets and learn techniques or a rapidly changing industry, taught by respected practitioners.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint degree you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to newswriting
  • Reporting London
  • Online journalism
  • Writing for publication
  • Theory and history of ideas

Level 2 topics include:

  • Multimedia journalism
  • Investigative journalism
  • News editing and production
  • Behind the news
  • Media law and ethics

Level 3 topics include:

  • Advanced reporting and campaigns
  • Features and magazines
  • Sports journalism
  • Arts journalism
  • Fashion journalism

Assessment

You are assessed via individual written and group research projects. A final dissertation must be a publishable article.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 260 points from at least two A levels, a Level 3 Diploma (or equivalent), or have successfully completed an appropriate Access Course. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Mature students with previous relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
