Overview

The course provides a practical and comprehensive guide to aspects of writing fiction, poetry and scripts with strong intellectual engagement with creative and professional aspects of writing the craft. Course content clearly focuses on developing writing skills, critical thinking and engagement with literary and larger intellectual issues informing the discipline of writing.

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint degree you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Prose Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Writing for Stage
  • Creative Nonfiction
  • Screenplays

Level 2 topics include:

  • Short stories
  • Stagecraft and writing
  • Poetry in theory and practice
  • Editing Processes
  • Publishing

Level 3 topics include:

  • Genre Fiction
  • Life Writing
  • Writing for Performance
  • Research and Writing
  • Editorial process and publication

Assessment

You are assessed on basis of coursework focussed on creative work produced during the module.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should submit two pieces of your creative work from two of the following three genres: prose fiction, poetry and/or script. In case of fiction and script, the writing sample must be a minimum of 500 words.
