Dr Helton Levy is a Lecturer in Digital and Visual Media at the School of Computing and Digital Media.

More about Dr Helton Levy

Dr Levy holds a PhD in sociology and a MA in media and communications from City, University of London. He holds a BA in journalism and a BA in humanities, with a minor in art history.

Previously, Dr Levy taught undergraduates and graduates at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, in addition to holding teaching positions at King’s College, London, and the City, University of London. What's more, Dr Levy is a journalist, photographer and an arts writer.

 At LondonMet, he has taught Journalism Project, Digital Journalism, and Arts Journalism. Dr Levy created the Urban Media module exploring the potential of technologies to shape life in big cities, set to have is debut in Autumn 2024.

 

Dr Levy has taught various digital media, cultural studies, and technology courses, including media, culture and society, digital journalism, critical media, and intercultural communications. In 2021, He created the Queer Media module at John Cabot University, the first one of its genre in Italy.

In addition, he also put together a Data Journalism module for undergraduates at John Cabot University.

Currently, he is focused on developing new approaches in critical media practice, queer spatialities, and Latin American studies.

Dr Levy's research interests lie in understanding the transformative aspects of digital media produced from the margins of society, in its technological, visual, and discursive convergence.

He has more recently investigated the history and power of queer media and engaged in urban media projects research on graffiti and precariousness.

Dr Levy is the author of Globalized Queerness (Bloomsbury, 2023), The Internet, Politics, Inequality in Contemporary Brazil: Peripheral Media (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018) and many peer-reviewed articles about digital activist cultures, social media discourse, queer media, and Latin American studies.

Dr Levy is a widely published journalist with over 20 years of experience. In 2017, he founded Readingtheperiphery.org, an online archive, providing free access to postcolonial literature about the "New World".

Dr Levy is an Associate Editor at Alternautas, Interdisciplinary Journal of Latin American Studies published by the University of Warwick. He is also a board member at the Frontiers in Communication and Journal of Global Diaspora and the Media.

Dr Levy has recently been part of an international team researching technological convergences in Europe's major cities.
