Overview

This course gives you the opportunity to specialise in two strongly linked disciplines, providing you with greater career choice and a range of highly transferable skills. As crime problems become an increasingly central focus, this course will provide you with the methodological skills and theoretical tools used by criminology practitioners. You will also develop an understanding of people and their behaviour.

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Criminology
  • Trends in Contemporary Society
  • Psychological Research Methods
  • Introduction to the Criminal Justice System
  • Personality and Social Psychology

Level 2 topics include:

  • Social Psychology
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Crime in Context
  • Interpreting Crime and Criminals

Level 3 topics include:

  • Crime Control
  • Punishment and Modern Society
  • Special Topics in Social Psychology
  • Special Topics in Cognitive Psychology
  • Project

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, seen and unseen examinations and a final dissertation.

Careers

A Combined degree in criminology and psychology is useful in a variety of professions including policing, social work, the probation service, human resources, victim support services and local authority research. Graduates often undertake further postgraduate academic study and/or vocational training.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent), plus at least 300 UCAS points.

Applications for advanced entry to year 2 or 3 of this programme will be assessed on an individual basis.  All applicants requesting advanced entry must supply a full and official transcript of their grades and modules plus at least one academic reference from their university.
